Strong Towns San Antonio Chapter

San Antonio deserves streets, neighborhoods, and a city budget built to last.

Streets Built for People

San Antonio's roads are designed for cars, not for the people who live here. We advocate for safer streets, better sidewalks, and neighborhoods where you don't need a car to get around.

Neighborhoods that Work

Strong communities are built incrementally, block by block. We support development patterns that strengthen existing neighborhoods instead of spreading the city thinner.

Financially Resilient Growth

Every new road, subdivision, and big-box development comes with a long-term cost the city often can't afford. We help residents understand how local spending decisions affect San Antonio's financial future.

About Us

We are San Antonians who believe this city can do better.

Strong Towns San Antonio is a local chapter of the national Strong Towns movement. We are neighbors, residents, and community members who see the same problems every day: roads that are dangerous, neighborhoods that are hard to get around without a car, and a city that keeps growing outward while existing communities get left behind. We show up to city meetings, talk to our neighbors, and push for decisions that make San Antonio financially stronger and more livable for everyone.

Our Commitment

We're here for the long game.

San Antonio is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. That growth brings real opportunity, but it also brings real costs that don't always show up in the headlines. We are committed to helping residents understand how their city works, where the money goes, and what kind of San Antonio we are actually building. This is slow, local work. And it matters.

What We Do
  • Local Conversation

We meet regularly to talk about what's happening in San Antonio, from city budget decisions to neighborhood development. These are open conversations for residents who want to understand the issues and figure out what to do about them. No expertise required.

  • Street Safety & Complete Streets

In 2025, San Antonio recorded more than 141 traffic deaths, including 54 pedestrians. Most of these deaths happen on wide, high-speed roads that were designed to move cars fast, not keep people safe. We track what the city is doing, show up to meetings, and push for streets that work for everyone.

  • Responsible Growth & Housing

San Antonio is ranked 8th in the nation for new home construction, with most of that growth happening at the edges of the city. Every new subdivision built far from the urban core comes with roads, pipes, and services the city will need to maintain for decades. We ask whether that growth is actually making San Antonio stronger, or just bigger.

  • City Budget & Infrastrature Costs

San Antonio's public housing portfolio alone carries more than $550 million in deferred maintenance, with officials estimating it would take 154 years to complete those repairs at current funding levels. That is what happens when a city builds faster than it can maintain. We watch the numbers and help residents understand what is actually being promised and what it costs.

How to Get Involved

  • Learn

Start by understanding how your city actually works. We share resources, host conversations, and connect you to the Strong Towns framework so you can see San Antonio differently.

  • Connect

Join our local conversations and meet other San Antonians who are paying attention. The more people who understand these issues, the harder they are to ignore.

  • Act

Show up to a city council meeting. Talk to your neighbors. Share what you know. Change in San Antonio starts at the block level, not the ballot box.
